Plathong of Thailand Fishing Friends first visit of the month was an absolute dream session, catching Palm Tree Lagoon BIG fish club qualifiers in both the 300lb Catfish and the 150lb Carp categories.In addition to these more than awesome catches there were many other Siamese carp and Mekong catfish caught that went over the 100lb mark. They also had many other superb catches that included giant snakehead, leopard catfish, chao phraya catfish, rohu, big-Y catfish, black shark minnow, striped catfish as well as both Asian and Amazon redtails and more... |
Regular customer fishing legend John Wilson returned on his quest for a big Mekong and to catch a wallago leeri. Although he did not get the 300lb monster Mekong he was after he did push up his pb to just over 200lb and did finally manage to catch the elusive wallago leeri. Other stunning fish included an albino Chinese bighead carp, his first lake caught freshwater stingray, and a tiger catfish. He also caught mollycot a new species for him as well as big-Y catfish, striped catfish, catfish shark as well as both Asian and Amazon redtails. |
Michael Quehenberger was also back for his annual visit and within a couple of hours of arriving had joined the Palm Tree Lagoon 150lb Club with a stunning mint conditioned fish that hadn't been caught for over 18 months. In addition he also caught giant gourami, as well as both Asian and Amazon redtails. |
Greek angler Dimitris Makris returned after and after a marathon 2 hour+ battle joined the Palm Tree Lagoon 300lb Catfish Club with an awesome fish. He also caught some other nice fish that included leopard catfish and Amazon redtails. |
Richard Clarke was back and this time brought his good mate from Pattaya Philip O'Connor and Yung Yutmed who used to guide with him when he was at Top Cats. The highlight of the session was a 150lb+ chao phraya caught by a very happy Phil and earned him membership of the Palm Tree Lagoon 150lb Chao Phraya Catfish Club. Phil also easily beat his pb Siamese carp so he was well pleased. In addition they caught mollycot, a rare Salween rita, catfish shark, clown featherback, rohu, striped catfish and Amazon redtails. |
Scottish angler Derek Ewing and his mate also had an enjoyable first visit to Palm Tree and caught a stunning alligator gar that was giving both Derek and Benny grief as they tried to lift it for a photo. They also caught many other fish that were a lot more obliging when it came to photographing them, these included wallago attu, bearded labeo, Mekong catfish, big-Y catfish, mollycot, parapatinga as well as many of both Thai and Amazon redtails. |
Stephen Bell made his first long awaited visit during the month and ended up with a mammoth haul. He caught a number of new species for him like albino pacu, African walking catfish, chao phraya, yellow catfish, black ear catfish. He also caught plenty of other big fish catching at least one fish over the 100lb mark everyday. These included Mekong catfish, Siamese carp, catfish shark, striped catfish, alligator gar, big-Y catfish and a number of both Thai and Amazon redtails. |
Gary Smock and his golfing mates were back and had a great session the pick of the fish were a stunning chao phraya and a hard to catch wallago leeri. In addition they caught a myriad of other species that included mrigal, yellow catfish,Mekong catfish, rohu, striped catfish, catfish shark, and numerous of both Asian and Amazon redtails. |
Tim went down to John Wilson private lake Bung Sawan in Chumphon to help John Wilson's good friend Simon Lawford. Simon has a great time catching a number of Siamese carp, ripsaw catfish, leopard catfish, java barb, tambaqui, alligator gar, chao phraya and a number of Amazon redtails. |
Sonja Maurer and her partner were extremely keen to fish at Palm Tree and their enthusiasm was rewarded as they caught a number of great catches that included Mekong catfish, big-Y catfish, catfish shark, striped catfish, clown featherback and numerous Amazon redtails. |
Ashley Davies was fishing various venues around Thailand and hadn't has a 100lb+ fish before coming to Palm Tree and he soon shook off that monkey, catching a number of big Mekong catfish to 200lb as well as a 100lb+ chao phraya catfish. He also caught a number of new species for him that included crystal eyed catfish, Asian redtail and a stunning wallago leeri. He also caught a number of striped catfish and Amazon redtails. |
Johnny and Tuula who were avoiding the Finish winter decided as it was Johnny's 60th to venture out to Khao Laem Dm wallago fishing. Unfortunately due to the cold weather the wallago weren't having it but the jungle perch certainly were with Johnny catching numerous ones of both species namely the hampala barb and the eye-spot barb. |
Another happy first timer was Lee Bond who caught some fantastic fish that included leopard catfish, an awesome alligator gar, big-Y catfish, Mekong catfish and Amazon redtail. |
Plathong of Thailand Fishing Friends took a couple of customers out sting ray fishing on the Mae Klong river and despite the cold weather having drooped the water temperature somewhat they still did manage to land one in the end. |
Another return customer was Derek John Mulvaney who caught a pb Amazon redtail as well as a stunning tambaqui and Mekong catfish. |
Darren Stock was also back for his annual visit, no Siamese carp for him this time but he did catch bearded labeo, black shark minnow, Mekong catfish, big-Y catfish, Amazon redtail and striped catfish. |

The guides were at it again during the month catching some huge Chinese bighead carp out of the local dam as well as Siamese carp, some impressive alligator gar, Mekong catfish and gourami. |
